Africa Unite, in collaboration with the Cape Town Refugee Center, is hosting two human rights workshops for refugee children on their holiday break. Both workshops are to be held at the CTRC office in Wynberg.
The first of the two workshops was held on July 4th, 2012. Ahmad Eddy, an Africa Unite Peer Educator, facilitated the first workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to inform the CTRC youth of their human rights and refugee rights.
Seven youths attended the first workshop. Eddy went over the basic human rights and refugee rights, and facilitated a discussion on the hardships of being a refugee in relation to access to education and jobs.
Many of the youth asked questions (“Why should I study for my degrees if I won’t be able to get a job later?”) and voiced concerns (“Obviously just talking about issues over and over again isn’t solving the conflicts between refugees and locals”).
The youth were engaged during the discussion and commented on how they were thankful for the workshop and for having their questions answered.
The second workshop will be held next Thursday, July 12th, 2012.
