On Mandela Day we are asked to contribute 67 minutes of our time towards a global movement for good. This global effort is in honor of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice in South Africa.
On 18 July, Africa Unite, in collaboration with Samora Youth Group, restored and painted the house of an elderly woman in Samora Michel. The energetic group of young people were committed partners on this day of good deeds. The Africa Unite team was greatly impressed with their personal initiative to better their own neighborhood. The community event also had the coverage from the Daily Sun Newspaper. This initiative of Africa Unite also helped to create new links with the Youth Development Centre (YDC).
After the house was nicely painted and a new door fixed, we cut a cake generously donated by Spar. The homeowner was grateful with eyes full of tears. She encouraged Africa Unite and the Samora Youth Group to continue to make a difference in society and contribute to positive changes in our communities.
We wish Madiba a Happy Birthday!
